Mundo
Maya, importer and retailer/wholesaler of quality Central American handcrafts based in Melbourne, is the realization of a dream inspired by lengthy
travels through this magical part of the world. The idea of bringing
these unique crafts to Australia was born from endless encounters with
interesting indigenous people of the Mayan world, including some extremely
talented artisans.
Mundo Maya is Spanish for ‘Mayan World’ - the world of the ancient Maya - an amazing civilization which flourished
over 1000 years ago throughout Mexico and Central America, whose descendants
live on today. Many still hold strong their Mayan tradtions,
including weaving, beading and other craft-making.
I am particularly fond of Guatemala, a country rich in
colour, culture and history where over 60% of the population is Mayan.
We buy from many individual families and communities, which makes business dealings…well…
interesting! The people are curteous and shy, yet warm and hospitable…
They always greet you with a smile and a “Buenas dias”,
and leave you with “Que te vaya bien” (literally: that you
go well).
Mundo Maya strives to help
increase our sense of global unity in Australia and to add splashes of
colour and charm to our already cosmopolitan city of Melbourne.
It also provides
an opportunity for the skilled craftspeople of Central America to have
their works of art exhibited and appreciated by their pacific neighbour.
Financially, the individuals involved and the country as a whole benefit
a great deal from the opportunity to export their crafts through an
ethical-trade business.
Enjoy your time in my Mayan World...
